It can happen to anyone regardless of age, gender or race. The police can stop and search any individual if they suspect that person may be involved in an incident, carrying drugs or a dangerous weapon that could be used to commit a crime or cause criminal damage.
Stop and Search has been a seriously contentious issue creating a lot of confusion. People who face the Stop and Search process by the police can often find it overwhelming and in many instances have been treated unfairly. Now a new app has been developed to help people who find themselves on the wrong end of Stop and Search.
The app’s developers Aaron Sonson, Satwant Singh Kenth and Gregory Paczkowski have all been stopped and searched several times and during those instances were not aware of their own rights let alone the correct procedure the police should follow. They developed the app to provide more awareness and knowledge for Stop and Search. The app has three key features – know your rights, upload and rate experience and view local stops.
The Know your Rights section is designed in a comic book interactive format which details the stages of stop and account and stop and search in a clear and definitive manner. In the section of Upload and Rate of the app users are able to comment on their treatment by the police officer. Using GPS the user is able to tag the stop and search incident. The final section of the app details a map where stops and searches have been made, and ratings made in a 10-mile radius of the location found via GPS. The app does not collect personal data of the user and is independent of the police.
This app is simple and tells you all you need to know about Stop and Search. Stop and Search app is available for download on Blackberry App World and coming soon to Android and iPhone. Further information on the app can be found here. For a full definition of Stop and Search you can visit Metropolitan Police’s website here.
